Industry standards are constantly changing, and the current transition to using PC-11 is no different. Hyped as the “Next Generation Heavy Duty Engine Oil,” PC-11 is designed to increase a vehicle’s fuel efficiency while protecting its engine.
The new standard was announced at the end of last year, but products will start being available in 2016. Since there’s a lot to understand, and new products are being developed, we wanted to take a few moments and update you on what to expect.
Chevron actually went ahead and created this helpful website to assist business owners and heavy duty motor oil users during this time of transition. Here’s a quick overview of the last two updates:
4/25/16: A Chevron customer asked what’s the biggest confusion surrounding Marketing of PC-11. You can read the full answer here, but here’s the gist: “According to a recent CCJ survey, almost 48% of respondents are slightly to very concerned about the implementation of PC-11“
4/11/16: Another Chevron customer asked “What is High-Temperature High Shear (HTHS) Viscosity and why is it important?” Again, you can read the full answer here, but in short: “You may not know it, but there are actually four viscosity measurements that are made to define an engine oil’s viscosity grade. The most familiar measurements is kinematic viscosity (KV) which is most commonly run at 100oC and is included in most standard used oil analysis reports. HTHS viscosity is also important, as it is run at a higher temperature (150oC) and also under stressed conditions that are more relevant to oil’s performance in hot regions of the engine, including bearings and in the overhead.”
For regular updates make sure to check out Chevron’s helpful and informative website. PC-11 is definitely a change, but a little education and understanding will ease the transition.
