California is known for its mild winters, but if you plan on traveling out of state, or love hitting the slopes, it’s important to ensure your car is prepped and ready for cold winter conditions. Breakdowns can happen at any time, but with a little planning and forethought, you can hit the road with confidence no matter what lies ahead.
Pack an emergency kit. Flat tires, mechanical failures, and overheated engines are part of car ownership. Since events like these are unpredictable, it’s important that your car is equipped with an emergency maintenance kit. For snowy weather, make sure you include the following:
– A small shovel
– At least two gallons of water
– Blankets
– Gloves, hats, and jackets
– Flares
– A reflective vest
– Carjack
– GPS or satellite system
– Cellphone charger
– Battery powered radio
– Tire chains
Monitor your fluid levels. Before you head out the door, you’ll also want to make sure that all of your vehicle’s fluid levels are topped off. Invest in an oil change, make sure the radiator is equipped and ready for extended travel, and double-check your windshield wiper fluid. If you find yourself stuck in white-out conditions, you want to make sure that you can combat the snow and ice without having to pull over.
Check your tire pressure. When was the last time you filled up the tires on your vehicle? Low tire pressure makes it difficult for your car to gain traction, especially in wet or slippery conditions. It will require a few minutes of extra effort, but you want to keep your PSI between 30 and 35 for ultimate control.
