Some may ask what do farmers do after harvest? You may think there is this huge sigh of relief that the season is over, but in actuality, farming is never ending. As soon as harvest is completed, there is the realization that winter is only a very short time away.
Fields need to be prepped for dormancy and spring seeding, some post-harvest spraying needs to be completed, winter weed control management plans need to be made, pre-emergent applications finished, and depending on the crop there may be product to sell, move, and monitor. Let’s just say, a farmer’s job is never done.
Here’s a quick look at a few things all farmers have to do post-harvest:
1. Fieldwork. Tilling, disking, ripping, land-leveling, and ploughing, to name a few. Depending on the crop and the stage of planting, the type of field work may vary but will be needed for all.
2. Spraying. Weeds should be managed throughout the entire growing season to help maximize yield potential and help reduce harvest problems due to weed escapes or late-emerging weed populations.
3. Equipment clean-up. The most miserable job of all of harvest comes after it is completed. The equipment (harvesters, sprayers, tractors, etc) needs to be cleaned, and cleaned well. Every belt, bearing and chain must be checked during the winter to ensure the machines are ready for next harvest.
